Your initial consultation appointment is for us to get to know each other and discuss your wishes and concerns. If you have an urgent problem which requires immediate attention it may be necessary to delay some items of your initial comprehensive examination until a subsequent appointment.
Prior to your initial consultation we will ask you to complete a comprehensive medical history, dental history and smile assessment questionnaire. This will help us to ensure your well being and to focus on your individual concerns. Our treatment co ordinator is avalible to help with this stage.
We provide a written treatment plan based on your examination and discussion to ensure you are happy with the proposed treatment
What does your Initial Consultation Involve?
Listening
The opportunity for us to listen to your wishes and requirements with regard to your dental care or cosmetic dental appearance.
The opportunity to listen to your anxieties about dental treatment (if you have any) and discuss the options available.
Examination
Of the soft tissues and cancer screening of your face and neck, inside your mouth and other associated structures. The mouth is the mirror of the body and may show early signs of a general illness before you are aware of any problems. "Early diagnosis means better prognosis."
Of your teeth and gums including the presence of plaque and bleeding gums. Bleeding gums are an indication of gum disease and must not be ignored.
Gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss in adults. It may not be obvious unless you know the symptoms. If you have bleeding gums, bad breath, loose teeth or areas that trap food, you may be developing gum disease.
Of the way your teeth bite together. Imbalance may cause pain in your jaw joints, headaches or breakage of teeth and fillings.
Xrays and Saliva tests
Digital xrays mean these can be viewed immediately to help diagnosis.
A saliva test may be required to assess the quality of your saliva which helps us to determine your risk of developing dental decay.
A microscopic examination of the types of bacteria that your dental plaque consists of is often helpful in providing you with appropriate oral hygiene advice.
